In the final chapter of 2 Samuel, its writer

provides for his readers one of the most heartbreaking episodes in

the history of King David's rule. As the result of their blatant

rebellion against God, the judgment of their sin would bring great

calamity against God's people. However, a sacrifice would display

God's mercy, foreshadowing God's mercy through Christ; sacrifice

marks all those who come to God in faith. -2 Samuel
