At first glance, this passage seemingly covers
widely contrasting themes in regard to its narrative. We read of
God’s goodness toward Abraham and how He desires to bless all the
nations through him. Yet, we also encounter a harrowing account of
man’s depravity and God’s overwhelming judgment toward sinners. In
the end, we are left with a depiction of despondence from the
rightful wages of wickedness. Yet, as with all of Scripture, there
is an ever-present and irresistible thread of God’s grace which
points to the gospel.
